Let me tell you about this new scent

A refreshing aromatic candle with bergamot, coriander leaf, and buchu leaves for your kitchen windowsill.

Terraces will be the second scent in our 100% plant-based and 100% biodegradable collection, and I can't wait for you to smell it!

Terraces' Origin Story

We started with arguably the best Bergamot essential oil (EO) in the world, coming from the peels of hand-picked fruits from a nitrogen-enriched orchard. When opening the bottle, we actually noticed first the gentle orange blossom and "dulcish" aromatic notes (some of us thought of tea), before connecting with citrus. Especially smelling it next to more mass-produced commodity Bergamot EOIs, the complexity was striking.

We chose to start with that oil both because it smelled incredible and because it is among the ingredients in our fragrance partner's palette that scores the highest across all sustainability aspects. The real challenge was how to turn this into a candle. If we could have, we would have just popped this into a candle and voilà! It's that beautiful.

However, this was not an option, partly because of the sheer cost of the oil (which would require us to charge significantly more), but mostly because on its own it simply doesn't work in a candle.

So the challenge became to create a fragrance that:

  • Centered the bergamot oil and allowed it to shine
  • Celebrated the bright, aromatic character of the bergamot oil
  • Increased the transport of the overall formula so the candle could burn safely
  • Created a coherent story that could transport our imagination
  • Had a unique profile amidst the crowded space of legacy Bergamot scents
  • Kept within our budget (which still has some limits, even if it may be the highest among our peers)

After months of sweat, toil, persistence and ahas!, Terraces was born.

We anchored the olfactive profile in the double meanings of the word "Terraces"—which applies both to the form of agriculture practiced in the hilly Calabrian terrain as well as the more leisurely evocation of a vista through an ancient portico.

What It Smells Like

The scent of Terraces is distinctly aromatic and refreshing. Coriander leaf gives it a strong vegetal quality that will evoke fresh potted herbs for some, while Buchu leaves adds a minty greenness and a blackcurrant-like note. The other 4 ingredients (just 7 total) round out the fragrance to provide additional depth and light.

To me, it's a perfect kitchen windowsill candle for springtime. Green Market lovers will probably also love this one—though the two scents are definitely distinct. We're really enjoying it here at the studio!

Subscribers signed up for our Seasonal Scent option in May will be the first to receive it. In the meantime, you can get a sniff of Terraces in this month's Scent-to-Home sample set.
