Rather than tell you what’s not in our candles,
here’s everything that’s in them:
Bergamot Essential Oil
The hero of the scent—green, zesty, citrusy, a touch floral, with balsamic undertones (not in the sense of balsamic vinegar—but rather in that of soft, resinous, and woody). We have smelled a lot of bergamot oils, and this one has in our opinion the most complex and sophisticated profile of them all.
The bergamots are grown and processed at the same site in Calabria (Italy) to preserve the fruits’ freshness. Skilled laborers perform manual picking to maintain the health and integrity of the bergamot trees. Our supplier is a multi-generational family-owned business dedicated to organic farming and stewardship of the land.
Coriander Essential Oil
The clear vice-captain of Terraces, Coriander (also known as cilantro) provides power and shares some of Bergamot’s citrus and aldehydic facets, making it a smooth partner in this scent. The oil is produced by steam distillation of the leaves and comes to us from Moldova.
Buchu Leaf Essential Oil
Buchu reinforces the zestiness of the bergamot, with mint-like aspects and a sulfuric note reminiscent of blackcurrants. The leaves, only obtainable from South Africa’s Western Cape, are steam distilled to produce essential oil.
Galbanum Balsam Oil
Galbanum is a resin obtained from the gum of Ferula plants, grown in Iran and Afghanistan, that reinforces the Bergamot oil’s woody and green facets. The resin is steam distilled to produce Galbanum essential oil.
Lavender Essential Oil
Lavender contributes fresh, herbal aromatic facets helping form round out the bergamot’s natural context. Produced in Bulgaria by steam distillation of the flowers.
Linalyl Acetate (Natural Isolate)
Linalyl acetate is the principal building block of the smell of bergamot. We use it here both to raise the flashpoint of the formula and to reinforce our bergamot. To extract it naturally, we combine purified Ho Wood essential oil from China (also referred to as linalool) with acetic acid, obtained by fermenting ethanol (itself derived from sugarcane, corn or cellulose).
Terpineol (Natural Isolate)
Terpineol contributes a powerful clean and orange blossom note and helps with the overall scent throw of the candle. Pine tree resin is distilled to produce turpentine oil, which is then fractionated (split into component parts through boiling or other similar methods). One of the resulting components (alpha-pinene) is then hydrated (mixed with water) with a catalyst to produce terpineol. It is sourced from various countries.
Triethyl Citrate (Solvent)
The primary purpose of using a solvent in candle fragrance is to make the fragrance blend more easily with the wax and ensure that it is evenly distributed throughout the candle, contributing to a good burn and good scent performance.
Despite its hard-to-pronounce name, Triethyl Citrate (“Tri” for short) is produced simply by combining sugarcane alcohol with citric acid obtained from plant starch or citrus fruits.
Coconut Wax Blend
We currently use the same wax formula, composed of three ingredients, across all our scents.
The majority of the blend is high-melt point coconut oil. The rest of the formula is soy wax and organic beeswax.
Note: The reason our candles burn so much better than most other candles that claim to use a coconut wax blend is due to our blend’s much higher coconut oil content.
Behind the Scent
Olfactive Profile
Terraces draws inspiration from the stepped hillside farms of Calabria and the many paired associations of a terrace: effort and rest, greenery and architecture, growing and healing.
The scent begins with Calabrian Bergamot, a timeless citrus with unexpected depth — floral brightness giving way to warm resinous woods and fresh aromatic notes.
Note: If you detest cilantro, this scent may not be for you.
Perfect for welcoming the sunshine, starting a new chapter, or dreaming up a new garden.
The Hero: Bergamot
Our bergamot essential oil is particularly complex and sophisticated, showcasing green, zesty, citrusy, a touch of floralcy, and soft, resinous undertones.

The uniqueness of Terraces is the combination of Bergamot and Coriander — it reminds me of an afternoon in Calabria where you feel the sun gently hitting your skin.

First Impressions
Our Keaper Lab participants smelled an unnamed and unmarked preview tealight with no context about the scent.
This is what they reported.
“It's a happy scent. Subtle, a bit like a scorched field in the summer.”
“Halfway between orange and mint; not a mix of the two, but a halfway point.”
”Woodsy but citrus? There is a really nice, earthy quality. It's such a unique scent. It's a rainy day and it feels fitting for the day.“

Local Customs
It’s not so neatly ordered
here. The fiumare surge and wane.
Fresh herbs bunch the countertops
and grasses green the sills. Mosaic tile fades to
a doorway open to the season,
looking on a terrace garden of bergamot,
whose bright spirit carries back to us on the breeze
in the kitchen once again, in a cycle, without end.
