Patchouli Gayo Essential Oil
The hero of this scent, this carefully cultivated and historical patchouli presents interesting facets compared to conventional patchouli oils. Familiarly spicy, woody, musky and spiritual, Patchouli Gayo exhibits a fresher and less pronounced earthy note, and more camphorated top note reminiscent of mint or eucalyptus that will evoke a spa setting for many.
The oil is obtained through a steam distillation of the leaves of the Pogostemon Cablin plant. The leaves are harvested and processed by hand in the remote highlands of the Gayo region of Sumatra. Patchouli is an endemic plant of the Gayo mountains, its original land.
By working directly with producers, Mane is able pay much higher prices to farmers, and provide training for sustainable cultivation and careful processing that maximally preserves the olfactive profile of the plant.
“Tanoh” in Gayo language means at once “Land”, “Earth”, “Soil”, and “Our Land” referring specifically to the Gayo Highlands. The Gayo people maintain a unique and vibrant culture within the Indonesian archipelago despite multiple waves of colonialism over the past centuries and the devastating impact of the 2004 Tsunami. “Dawn” both reflects the mood of the scent, its ushering of new beginnings, as well as a nod to the time of day when peak cultivation of patchouli occurs.
Cedarwood Essential Oil (Virginia)
This classic essential oil comes from the steam distillation of the wood chips and sawdust from Juniperus Virginiana, also known as Eastern Red Cedar, which is endemic to large parts of North America (our oil in fact is sourced from a sustainable producer in Texas). Considered by many perfumers the most beautiful of the cedarwood oils, it helps bring out the woodiness of the patchouli and contributes a balsam-outdoorsy feeling.
Cardamom Pure Extract
Cardamom opens the fragrance in a cold, spicy way, pairing well with the aromatic aspect of our Patchouli Gayo. The oil is obtained from the whole pods of green cardamom (Elettaria Cardamomum) via an eco-friendly, supercritical fluid extraction process. Provenance may vary: Guatemala, Honduras, India.
Frankincense Essential Oil
This iconic oil evokes ancient cities and spirituality. In Tanoh Dawn, it reinforces scent throw and helps the fragrance take off. The oil is produced from the steam distillation of gum from Boswellia Carteri (aka the frankincense tree) in Somalia.
Cedarwood Essential Oil (China)
Despite its similar name, this essential oil comes from the steam distillation of wood chips and sawdust from Cupressus Funebris, also known as the Chinese Weeping Cypress. We’ve used this ingredient in the past as it provides a strong backbone and verticality to woody compositions. When used smartly, its smokiness can be a real asset.
“Darkoa”
The secret superpower ingredient that ties this fragrance together. “Darkoa” is a distinctive proprietary ingredient of our fragrance house resulting from the co-extraction of cocoa powder and the same sustainable Patchouli Gayo Essential Oil centering Tanoh Dawn.
It beautifully juxtaposes a note of bitter (but smooth) chocolate with earthy, arboraceous facets. The subtle chocolate-leather nuance adds depth, culminating in a creamy, woody harmony. The provenance of the cocoa powder used in the co-extraction varies: Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria and Côte D’Ivoire.
Triethyl Citrate (Solvent)
The primary purpose of using a solvent in candle fragrance is to make the fragrance blend more easily with the wax and ensure that it is evenly distributed throughout the candle, contributing to a good burn and good scent performance.
Despite its hard-to-pronounce name, Triethyl Citrate (“Tri” for short) is produced simply by combining sugarcane alcohol with citric acid obtained from plant starch or citrus fruits.
Coconut Wax Blend
We currently use the same wax formula, composed of three ingredients, across all our scents.
The majority of the blend is high-melt point coconut oil. The rest of the formula is soy wax and organic beeswax.
Note: The reason our candles burn so much better than most other candles that claim to use a coconut wax blend is due to our blend’s much higher coconut oil content.
