It was the 17th ingredient we smelled one day in January 2025 with our master perfumer Ugo at the Mane North America HQ.
I wrote in my notes: "Amazing. Less camphoraceous than EO [Essential Oil]. Arid, cassis-like. MY FAVORITE SO FAR."
The ingredient in question was a eucalyptus supercritical fluid extract. The extraction process is similar to an essential oil distillation, but instead of using water and high heat, you use CO2 and high pressure.
This allows you to pull a complete, heat-undamaged profile of compounds from plants.
Mane's technical notes describe this eucalyptus extract as a true eucalyptus scent, which, compared to a classic essential oil, is "fruitier, less minty, with a balsamic cistus note and blackcurrant accents […], adding a warm, resinous woody facet, like a comforting balm."
As eloquent as those notes are, how far short they fall of the irreplaceable experience of the smell itself!

At this point we were finalizing the scent that would become Terraces and had already started work on Tanoh Dawn (our current Seasonal Scent). But I resolved that day that our next project would feature this eucalyptus extract.
Shortly after, Claudia on our production team brought up the Japanese word komorebi, which describes the way that sunlight filters through the trees (more on that below).
Light in the Leaves is our take on this beautiful concept. Centering that eucalyptus extract, it is the fourth 100% plant-based and 100% biodegradable fragrance in our Full Circle Collection.

Subscribers signed up for the Seasonal Scent option will receive it in October. If you aren't a subscriber, you can try it in this month's Scent-to-Home set: The mini tealights make great travel candles and the set comes with a $19 credit toward a new subscription.
I'd love to hear what you think of the preview tealight! As always, you can simply reply with your thoughts.
Have a great week!
